Verisyse™ Phakic Intraocular Lens Implant

For extremely nearsighted people, -10 to -20 diopters of myopia (nearsightedness), Cornea Clinic offers a
promising new procedure: a lens implant that is intended for patients who are not suitable candidates for cornea-
based refractive surgery like LASIK and PRK.
Depending upon the architecture of the eye, the size of the pupil and the thickness of the cornea, LASIK and PRK
can be used to correct up to approximately -10  to  -12 diopters of nearsightedness. Patients with higher degrees
of nearsightedness often are not safe surgical candidates. In September of 2004, the Food and Drug
Administration
(FDA) approved the first implantable lens designed to help people who are too nearsighted for
LASIK and PRK.

What is the Verisyse™ Lens?

The Verisyse Phakic Intraocular Lens is a small microlens implant placed into the eye
in an attempt to reduce the impact of very high degrees of nearsightedness.
Called "one of the most amazing inventions of 2004" by Time magazine, the Verisyse
lens implant has been used in Europe for more than a dozen years with over
150,000 Verisyse lenses having been safely implanted worldwide.
Am I a candidates for Verisyse?

If you are very nearsighted, at least 21 years of age and dependent on thick glasses or contact lenses, you may be
a candidate for the Verisyse™ Phakic IOL.

A series of tests performed by your doctor can help you decide if the Verisyse™ procedure is right for you:
  • Your eyes are healthy with no eye disease, iris, pupil or corneal abnormality, or history of retinal
    detachment.
  • Your nearsightedness can be corrected with lenses between -5.0 to -20.0 diopters.
  • You have 2.5 diopters or less of astigmatism.
  • Your eyes are stable and your nearsightedness has not changed more than 0.50 diopters for 6
    months prior to surgery.
  • You are not currently pregnant or nursing.
  • There is not another vision correction procedure that provides a better alternative for your visual
    condition
The Verisyse procedure

The Verisyse™ Phakic IOL is a micro lens placed behind your cornea.

It is made out of PMMA, the same material used safely for the past 50
years in cataract surgery.
“Phakic” means that your natural crystalline lens is left in the eye.
Your natural lens helps your eye adjust between seeing objects that
are near and far
An outpatient treatment, the procedure takes only about 15 to 30
minutes. One eye is treated at a time.

  • Eye drops will be given to reduce your pupil size.
  • For better access to your eye, your doctor will use an
instrument to comfortably hold your eyelids open during the
    procedure.
  • A local and/or IV anesthetic is given, so the procedure is
    virtually painless.
  • A micro incision is made in the cornea for Verisyse™ to be
placed between the iris and cornea.
  • The Verisyse™ IOL is centered in front of the pupil and is
gently attached to the iris to hold the lens in place.
  • The small incision is closed with microscopic stitches that
    dissolve on their own.
  • A temporary shield will be placed over your eye to protect it
during the time just after the procedure.
Frequently Asked Questions About the Verisyse™ Phakic Lens Implant

Will I be able to see or feel the Verisyse™ Phakic IOL in my eye?
Once the Verisyse™ Phakic IOL is placed inside your eye, it is virtually undetectable; however, you and others may be able to see the lens in your eye
if you look very closely. Because the Verisyse™ Phakic IOL is placed inside your eye, you will not be able to feel it.
Is Verisyse™ safe?
Yes. The Verisyse™ Phakic IOL is made from polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) -- an extremely well proven biocompatible material that has been widely
used in and on eyes for over 50 years.
Can I see well near and at a distance with the Verisyse™ Phakic IOL?
Most people who have the Verisyse™ procedure see well near and at a distance because their natural lens is left in place. This lens (the crystalline
lens) naturally adjusts to focus on near and distant objects. As you age, this natural lens function may diminish and you may need reading glasses to
see objects that are near.
Can I go swimming with the Verisyse™ Phakic IOL in my eye?
You can swim and participate in virtually any other activity with the Verisyse™ Phakic IOL because unlike contact lenses, the Verisyse™ Phakic IOL is
implanted in the eye, in front of the crystalline lens. Therefore, it is not affected by external elements such as water.
Is the Verisyse™ Phakic IOL affected by elements like rain or steam?
The Verisyse™ Phakic IOL is not affected by external elements like rain or steam because it is implanted behind the cornea of your eye.
How long does the Verisyse™ Phakic IOL last?
Clinical evaluations have proven that PMMA can remain in the eye for decades without changing its properties or losing stability; however, the
procedure is completely reversible. If, in the future, your surgeon determines that there is a better procedure, the Verisyse™ Phakic IOL can be
surgically removed at any time. Only your doctor can determine if this measure may be necessary

Preoperative power -11.00 diopters.... Corneal thickness insufficient for LASIK treatment.

Not comfortable with contact lens wear...... Quality of vision not very good with glasses..

Underwent Verisyse phakic intraocular lens implantation surgery in both eyes. Extremely pleased with the outcome of
surgery.... postoperative unaided vision (ie without glasses) 6/6 (20/20)in the right eye, and 6/9 in the left eye (20/30) . I
could go back to work without my glasses in a weeks time. Thanks Doctor, thanks for everything
